Adhering to Barangaroo’s sustainability requirements, we were inspired to hero the old world of print through traditional materials juxtaposed against unexpected, clean lines. Products are displayed within custom designed units, above these, painted white books run along the corniced bulkhead, giving an artistic nod to an old library or bookshop.
News Essentials is the luxury offering from City Convenience, coming about as a condition of approval in Barangaroo. They were required to move away from their normal retail look towards a high-end one that covered both news agency and convenience products. The site was very small and had large ducting running across the main wall, which we needed to design around, whilst at the same time adhering to the strict Green Star sustainability requirements.
Our design harks back to the old world of print, using traditional design details and materials contrasted with clean, modern lines in keeping with the Barangaroo precinct and the client. We designed bespoke units to display the products, which have both functional and sculptural qualities, sitting a-top timber floor inlaid with circular cut marble, an abstracted nod to the company branding.
